My wife Julia and I found out just last week that we are not just expecting one baby next spring, but we’re expecting two! We were thrilled beyond words. We already have a little girl and a little boy, so this will make four. We’ve always wanted to have a large family, and in fact, we had often talked about having four kids. Needless to say, we are feeling so very blessed and loved by God.

This morning, I reminded myself of some scripture passages that talk about children being a blessing. And I thought I’d share them here:

Psalm 127:3-5 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

John 16:21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

Proverbs 17:6 Grandchildren are the crown of the aged.

Luke 18:16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.”

We will have our hands full with four little kids (all of whom will be four and under at the time the twins are born). It won’t be easy. But I am reminded of what a wonderful gift this really is; especially considering that many people, including some of our good friends, are unable to conceive. My heart breaks for them.

If you happen to be one of those people who desperately want children but are unable to do so, I hope this post hasn’t been discouraging for you. I am reminded of the number of children out there who are in foster care, longing to be adopted into a loving home. Perhaps God is calling you to be one of those very special people who adopts. Adoption is beautiful; and it is a beautiful picture of God’s grace. Or maybe God has placed other children in your life for you to love with all your heart – nieces, nephews, neighbours, kids at your church, etc.

Whether they are naturally your own or not, children are a great blessing. May we never see them as a burden, or a problem, or an inconvenience. They are wonderful gift from God. Let’s treat them that way, and be thankful.
